NLP stands for Neurolinguistic Programming. It is a communication model that was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the seventies. They created it by modeling people who were excellent and successful in their fields of therapy. Neuro has to do with the physical, mental and emotional components of our neurology. Linguistic refers to the language or words we use to communicate with ourselves (self-talk) and others. Programming deals with how our experiences, thoughts, and emotions affect our lives. Our brain, which in part houses our mind, is very much like a super-computer, that is programmed by our thoughts, emotions and experiences. They color our world and influence our values and beliefs. Our reality is created by the inner words, sounds, and pictures we see during our experiences.
The techniques and tools of NLP are used to help overcome fears, phobias, poor self-esteem, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eliminate bad habits and reduce stress. It can increase self-awareness, emotional intelligence, productivity, self-confidence as well as improve relationships. NLP has gained great popularity and is readily used in Personal Development, Health, Business, Education, Leadership, and Therapy.
